The adventure of ‘How I Met Your Father’ has begun. HL spoke with the actors and creators EXCLUSIVELY about the father’s identity, bringing Kim Cattrall on board, and what to expect.

How I Met Your Mother is one of the most popular comedies on television. How I Met Your Father, the latest spinoff, begins on January 18 and follows a mother named Sophie as she tells her son the story of how she met his father. The mother’s identity remained a secret until the end of How I Met Your Mother, and the HIMYF EPs informed HollywoodLife EXCLUSIVELY that the father’s identity isn’t set in stone just yet.

«When we started writing, we didn’t know who the father was,» Elizabeth Berger told HollywoodLife. «Now that we’ve spent a season with these characters, we’re starting to build ideas and formulating a strategy in our heads.»

This Is Us is where Isaac [Aptaker] and I are wrapping off our final year, and it’s a show where we were taught the importance of having a plan and knowing where you’re headed. We’re absolutely using what we’ve learned in the past to this one. But, as previously stated, nothing is fixed in stone. However, things are beginning to take shape.»

Francia Raisa, who plays Sophie’s best friend Valentina, is «constantly» inquiring about the father’s identity. «They haven’t told me, but I don’t think they will because I keep bugging them, which is annoying.» As a result, I’ll have to explore several options. «There were clearly folks I think we were pulling for,» Tom Ainsley, who plays Charlie, said at the end of the season. In the Hulu series, Kim plays Sophie’s older sister. Hilary Duff and Elizabeth wanted Kim from the start, but acquiring her felt «unrealistic and unreachable,» according to Isaac. «And then we were simply so fortunate,» he continued.

She responded to the materials and agreed to join us on Zoom. We went over the plot of the show and the character with her. After that, she strolled onto our soundstage a few weeks later and completely beyond all of our expectations. That day, the full cast arrived. They weren’t working, but they came in only to watch her work on the monitors. It was fantastic.»

How I Met Your Father is set in the same universe as How I Met Your Mother, and the writers aren’t ruling out the possibility of appearances from the original cast. Isaac told HollywoodLife, «It’s certainly feasible.» «I mean, that’s really fantastic.» The biggest relationship between the two shows, aside from the storytelling mechanism, is that we’re both set in the same version of New York City.
