Amber Portwood says she and her 12-year-old daughter Leah are talking again and that their relationship is «great.»
Amber Portwood and her daughter Leah were at odds in the most recent season of ‘Teen Mom OG.’ Now, the reality star is speaking to HollywoodLife EXCLUSIVELY about their relationship status.
Amber Portwood, 31, and her daughter Leah, 13, are working on their relationship with Teen Mom OG. Amber spoke about making progress with her daughter after their relationship got strained while promoting MTV’s new Teen Mom spinoff, Teen Mom Family Reunion, which premieres on Jan. 11 at 8 p.m. ET.
«Honestly, when it came to me with her, I did exactly what I believed I needed to do, which was give her space so she could comprehend what she was kind of like feeling and understand the emotions that she had,» the reality star EXCLUSIVELY told HollywoodLife.
«I can happily say that giving her space […] was the finest thing I ever could do because we actually chat now and she sees a brother all the time, and that’s exactly what I wanted,» she says.
«She’s hugging me,» Amber continued, «and it’s just such a different dynamic than what you guys saw last season on OG […] where it was just sort of leaving the house and without saying anything.» And it’s in this way that we’re starting to grow a little.»
She went on to claim that she’s trying not to «push» the teen, instead focused on providing her with the love and space she requires. «Right now, everything is fantastic. «To be honest, I can’t think of anything else,» she said.
Given how they became estranged for months — as seen in the most recent season of the MTV series — it’s good to hear the mother-daughter duo is getting along better. «I don’t want to mess anything up, but [things] are nice,» Amber told Page Six in November 2021, when their relationship was already showing signs of improvement. «She’s reaching out to me, and I’m [overjoyed].» «My arms are outstretched and open.»
Amber, who has a daughter with ex-fiancé Gary Shirley, also said that she has been honest with her daughter about her turbulent background, including her prison time and drug addiction. «She’s been interrogating me.» «As much as I could for her age, I’ve always told her the truth,» Amber explained. «As she’s gotten older, she’s picked up more knowledge.
‘Well, I don’t like that attitude or behavior,’ she says now, based on her age. That’s not who I am.’ I believe she has every right to be upset with me over a variety of issues. I let her experience her feelings, and I respect that.»
Amber, Farrah Abraham, Cheyenne Floyd, Ashley Jones, Briana Dejesus, Jade Cline, and Leah Messer reunite for a large family reunion to reconnect and celebrate their relationships on Teen Mom: Family Reunion, which airs Tuesday, January 11 at 8 p.m. ET. There will also be «surprise guests from the past and present,» so there will undoubtedly be lots of thrills!
