After surviving a horrific plane crash in 2008, Travis Barker stated it was all Kourtney Kardashian’s doing that gave him “the strength and hope” to fly again.
When it comes to his bold decision to resume flying, Travis Barker, 45, credits his girlfriend Kourtney Kardashian, 42. When the couple jetted off to Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, for a romantic getaway last month, the Blink-182 drummer told NYLON magazine in an interview published Wednesday (Sept. 8) that Kourtney inspired him to face his fears of flying, which stem from surviving a 2008 plane crash that killed four people and left Travis with third-degree burns on his body.
Travis told the outlet, “It’s still very new to me, but having something that gives me the power and hope to be able to overcome things that were so horrific in my past, it just says a ton.”
The rocker added of the POOSH founder, “She’s absolutely that for me.” “When I’m with her, I’m unstoppable. It’s as if I’d never dreamed of flying before; I’d never even considered it.”
Travis also told Nylon that he agreed to travel with Kourtney prior to the Cabo vacation, but only if she gave him a heads up the day before. “I made a pact with her when she told me, ‘I’d love to do a lot of traveling with you.’ I’d want to accompany you to Italy. I’d want to accompany you to Cabo. I’d want to accompany you to Paris.
I’d want to accompany you to Bora Bora.’ And I answered, ‘Well, when the time comes for you to fly, I promise you I’ll be there with you.’ With you, I’d do anything. And all you have to do is give me 24 hours notice,’ Travis explained. “And she went ahead and did it.”
Travis’ trip to Cabo on Aug. 14 was a huge milestone for him, and the two-hour flight turned out to be “the smoothest ever,” as he recounted to Nylon. The musician confirmed that he practiced some breathing exercises with a friend in preparation for the trip, but he felt “great” once he arrived in Mexico, enjoyed a scenic stay with his fiancée, and then went home. And it’s all down to Kourtney!
Travis had promised he would never fly again after the plane tragedy he was in in 2008 until he went away with Kourtney. He and DJ AM, who died of an overdose in 2009, were the only two people who survived the crash, which occurred when a tire exploded on the runway at Columbia Metropolitan Airport in South Carolina.
They planned to fly to Van Nuys, California following one of their TRV$DJAM band gigs when the pilots tried to cancel the trip in the middle of takeoff, forcing the jet to smash through the airport fence, cross South Carolina Highway 302, and crash into an embankment, bursting into flames.
Travis, on the other hand, now feels safe enough to fly again. In fact, after their Cabo getaway, the singer and Kourtney boarded another plane to continue their summer holiday in Italy. The happy couple, who have been dating since early 2021, went swimming at San Fruttuoso and attended the Dolce & Gabbana fashion show in Venice while they were there.
