The opening monologue of the new season of “SNL” doubled as a Wilson family reunion, with the host bringing his two brothers along and showing them in the audience!
The season 47 opener of Saturday Night Live was hosted by Owen Wilson, 52. With his hilarious opening monologue, the Wedding Crashers actor brought the house down and his family to their feet. Owen expressed his delight in hosting the first program of Season 47.
“It feels great to be back in the midst of people! Andrew, 57, and Luke, 50, are my two brothers,” he continued, as his older and younger brothers Andrew, 57, and Luke, 50, were in the crowd!
In addition to his brothers, Owen had a fantastic self-deprecating joke about his family life. “My father always claimed he was a charter member of the 3-7-9-0 club: 3 sons, 7 high schools, 9 colleges, zero degrees, and it was quite generous of my father to put it that way, because each of my brothers only went to one high school and college,” he remarked, much to the delight of the audience!
He joked about his family and his own profession, as well as encouraging the crowd to “relax out” and enjoy the event!
Fans have been yearning for the Dallas native to host SNL for years! In 2016, the comedian made a guest appearance on the long-running series, reprising his popular character Hansel from Zoolander opposite Ben Stiller, 55, for “Weekend Update.”
His outfit, right down to his green sweater and scarf, was remarkable. Owen made his cinematic debut as Hansel in the 2001 drama about a famous male model who is brainwashed into killing Malaysia’s Prime Minister. Since then, the film has become a cult classic.
Owen hasn’t hosted SNL for one very personal reason: nerves! “When I have to speak in front of a group, I get quite apprehensive. In a YouTube video, he remarked on a hike to friend Kevin Nealon, “I’ve never done any of those commencement talks or Saturday Night Live because I get too scared.”
“It usually makes me nervous because I’m not sure if I’m going to have the correct tie. What happened to the cumberbund and the cufflinks? It just appears to be a little nerve-wracking,” he added.
The actor has been seen in multiple trailers for the evening, which also features musical guest Kacey Musgraves, 33, who is from Texas. “Hello, my name is Owen Wilson, and I’m the host of Saturday Night Live with musical guest Kacey Musgraves,” he stated from Studio 8H. “Fellow Texan!” exclaims the narrator. Kacey responded with a witty remark. “In Texas, everything is bigger…are the burgers bigger, too?” Kenan Thompson responded with a hilarious question. Owen remarked, “It depends on who’s making them,” while Kacey stated she makes them “the size of her fist.”
