On Saturday, Alabama head coach Nick Saban’s coaching cost cost them a win against Texas A&M in the fourth quarter. When the Alabama Crimson Tide walked onto Kyle Field on Saturday night, they were undefeated. Sure, they had a scare against Florida earlier in the season, but did anyone think the Crimson Tide would struggle against Texas A&M? The Aggies, on the other hand, proved the nation wrong.

Texas A&M defeated Alabama 41-38 in the season’s biggest upset victory. It’s a no-brainer, really. When Alabama supporters reflect on this game, they will point to some of Nick Saban’s coaching decisions.

Although Saban is rarely criticized, two of his past Heisman Trophy winners, DeVonta Smith and Mark Ingram, have criticized his red zone play-calling.

Nick Saban’s play-calls in the red zone proved to be costly

The Crimson Tide offense drove all the way to the Aggies’ four-yard line in the fourth quarter, behind 31-27. Despite the field position, Saban elected not to use his rushing approach and instead chose to pass three times in a row, all of which were incomplete. Instead of taking another shot at the end zone on fourth-and-goal, Saban chose to kick a field goal to narrow the deficit to 31-30.

At first glance, the decision appeared to have paid off, as the Crimson Tide scored a touchdown on a Jameson Williams reception and converted the two-point conversion to take a 38-31 lead. However, in retrospect, Saban’s decision hurt them more than it helped them.

Texas A&M would not have had the opportunity to kick the game-winning field goal in the final seconds of regulation. Texas A&M would have needed to score on fourth-and-goal to win if Saban had tried to run the ball or try for the touchdown on fourth-and-goal earlier in the fourth quarter.

This game will serve as motivation for Saban and Alabama for the rest of the season. Even though they lost, the Crimson Tide are still in contention for the national championship.
