On whether Olivia and Elliot would get together on ‘SVU’/’Organized Crime,’ Mariska Hargitay weighed in, admitting that things are ‘percolating’ between them.
It’s the ultimate game of “will they or won’t they?” Fans have been speculating about an Olivia Benson and Elliot Stabler relationship for years. There’s certainly energy between them, and after that “I love you” declaration in the first season of Organized Crime, nothing seems out of the question.
On the September 23 edition of TODAY, Mariska Hargitay and Christopher Meloni discussed their relationship and disclosed if they are planning a future romance.

When asked if Stabler and Benson will get together, Mariska answered on TODAY, “It’s all below percolating.” “We’re still trying to find our path after Stabler being gone for ten years and the manner he went and the intricacy of what’s transpired and how he surprised me when he returned. But it’s nuanced and genuine, and I think what I like best about it is that it’s earned. This is a relationship that has been earned. On film, not many individuals had a 23-year relationship.”
In real life, Mariska and Christopher have been best friends since the debut of Law & Order: SVU in 1999. Mariska exclaimed that she and Chris shared “an unexplained, instantaneous connection that has only deepened, and I see it as a gift.” Mariska joked that they dated for four years and then “simply split up” when asked if they had ever dated. “Don’t tell our wives,” Chris joked.
Craig Melvin, a TODAY co-host, questioned Christopher about Elliot’s “I love you” to Olivia on Organized Crime. Elliot, according to Mariska and Christopher, was under “emotional duress” at the time. “I was saying it because it was in the middle of an intervention,” the actor continued. Olivia Benson was assisting my family in putting together an intervention. I was looking at Mariska when one of my girls remarked, ‘I love you.’
“How could you not?” Christopher asked Mariska as he looked over at her. They both said “I love you” on the show right then and there. Their bond is so healthy!
Season 23 of Law & Order: SVU premieres on NBC on September 23 with a two-hour premiere. The season 2 debut of Law & Order: Organized Crime will air at 10 p.m. after the premiere.
