Hbo Max Documentary Promises To Expose The "cult" Of Gwen…

A new documentary project will look into the late Gwen Shamblin Lara’s legacy as a diet expert and church leader.

The Way Down: God, Greed, and the Cult of Gwen Shamblin, a five-part docuseries, premiered its teaser on HBO Max on Thursday, Sept. 23. Interviews with people concerning Gwen’s Christian diet regimen, The Weigh Down Workshop, as well as the Tennessee-based Remnant Fellowship Church, which she eventually founded, were included in the movie.

“Despite a carefully cultivated image, Lara and the church eventually fielded charges of emotional, psychological, and physical abuse, and exploitation for their purported cult-like practices,” according to HBO Max’s synopsis of the series.

“God revealed to me that the key to lasting weight control is a matter of the heart,” Gwen said in a previously taped footage included in the movie.

One of the people featured in the teaser tells the camera, “You educated your kids about drugs and alcohol, but you never thought to train your kids on cults.”

Gwen and her husband Joe Lara, who appeared in the 1990s television series Tarzan: The Epic Adventures, died in an aircraft crash in May, along with their son-in-law Brandon Hannah.

The crash also claimed the lives of four other people, all of them were leaders of the Remnant Fellowship Church, which Gwen formed in 1999.

Chrissy Teigen is an executive producer on the show, and the first three episodes premiere on HBO Max on Thursday, Sept. 30. Early next year, the two last episodes will premiere.
