If an employee is married to an unvaccinated person, the state’s major health provider will start fining them hundreds of dollars every month.

“The reality is that treating COVID-19 is expensive, especially for patients who require intense inpatient care, and we spent more than $9 million on COVID care for individuals who are covered on our health plans over the previous year,” Warner Thomas, CEO of Ochsner Health, told NOLA.

If an employee’s spouse or partner is not vaccinated, Ochsner Health will begin charging them $200 per month, or $100 per pay period. The “spousal COVID vaccine charge” will begin in 2022, although Thomas clarified that it is not a requirement, stating that non-employed spouses and domestic partners can choose a health plan other than the Ochsner’s.

Domestic partners or spouses are exempt from the cost, as are other dependents such as children who are covered by the employee’s health insurance.

Some on social media, including the Young Americans for Liberty, a libertarian student activist group, were quick to oppose the revelation.
