The 163 Catholics within the new Congress are break up on abortion: nearly all Republicans are pro-life and nearly all Democrats are abortion-rights advocates.
For incumbents, we checked their voting file as scored by NARAL and National Right to Life. Typically, those that obtained a 100% NARAL rating garnered a 0% score from National Right to Life (which might be most Democrats), and vice versa (which might be most Republicans).
For Freshmen, we checked their acknowledged positions on abortion, and the endorsements they obtained from pro-life and abortion-rights teams.
There had been a few notable exceptions. Among them are Rep. Daniel Lipinski, a Democrat from Illinois: he obtained a 51% score from NARAL and a 75% rating from National Right to Life.
More Republicans than Democrats differed with the bulk in their very own occasion.

For instance, Sen. Lisa Murkowski of Alaska agreed with NARAL 42% of the time, and with National Right to Life 28% of the time. Sen. Susan Collins of Maine obtained a 45% rating from NARAL and a 42% rating from National Right to Life. Rep. Walter B. Jones of North Carolina garnered a rating of 51% from NARAL and a score of 85% from National Right to Life.
It is clear that faith shouldn’t be a dependable predictor of the best way a Catholic member of the Congress will vote on abortion. Party issues—not faith.
