COVID-19 immunization for health workers is recommended by doctors.

Doctors Back Mandatory Covid-19 Vaccination For Health Workers - Abc…

According to Australia’s main medical body, the nation’s authorities should enforce COVID-19 immunization for doctors, nurses, and hospital cleaners, with the federal government placing the matter “extremely high on the agenda” of all state and territory chief health officers.

Key points:

  • The peak body representing doctors wants nationally consistent orders mandating vaccination for health workers
  • In some hospitals,15 per cent of nurses remain unvaccinated
  • The Health Minister says it’s high on the agenda for states and territories

The number of frontline workers infected with COVID-19 has alarmed the Australian Medical Association, who are calling for mandatory vaccinations in hospitals to prevent any more outbreaks in critical medical facilities.

Hospital workers should be prioritized, according to AMA President Dr. Omar Khorshid, with any worker in the healthcare industry thereafter included in the mandate.

“We’ve seen numbers from particular hospitals indicating that roughly 15% of nurses, for example, are not vaccinated,” said Dr. Khorshid.

“We believe that figures are greater when you consider other categories of hospital employees, such as clerical staff and cleaners.”

The AMA fears the rate of unvaccinated staff in hospitals is higher when staff beyond nurses are counted.

While the issue was essentially a concern for the states and territories, Health Minister Greg Hunt said it had been raised through the government’s medical expert panel, the Australian Health Protection Principal Committee (AHPPC), which includes all state and territory chief health officers.

“I believe this is now very high on the agenda of state and territory chief health officers,” he said, adding that it protects patients, individual workers, and the workforce from being furloughed.

New South Wales has already made vaccines mandatory for all healthcare professionals, with at least one shot necessary by the end of September.

Virgin recently joined Qantas in implementing a no jab, no work policy for its employees.

While the federal government has enforced vaccinations for elderly care employees, it has stated that no new directives will be issued.

Mr Hunt claimed that requiring vaccines for aged care employees at the Commonwealth level has dramatically increased immunization rates in the sector.
