The biggest game of the Champions League group stages so far will be played on September 28th at 8:00 pm. Both teams will be trying to stamp their authority and ambitions for the rest of the campaign in this vital match.

The History

Man City vs PSG has become a regular fixture in the Champions League’s knockout stages over the last decade, with Manchester City consistently outperforming their opponents. Fortunately for football enthusiasts, we will be treated to these two European footballing behemoths battling it out for the top qualifying spot in Group A.

Manchester City beat Paris Saint-Germain 4-1 on aggregate in the semi-finals last season, winning both legs 2-1 and 2-0. The scoreline might be misunderstood as Man City overpowering their opponents, but PSG may have shot themselves in the foot in both legs by receiving red cards.

Going a man down against a club like Man City is a death sentence, since the quality of possession retention and opportunity creation that Man City possesses is indisputably among the greatest in the world. PSG will be trying to atone for last season’s faults and exact retribution for their disgraceful departure from the Champions League.

A New Era?

PSG has made significant improvements to their already star-studded team this time around. PSG has become a team that you would ordinarily only dream about thanks to the addition of world-class players such as Sergio Ramos, Achraf Hakimi, Gianluigi Donnarumma, and, of course, Lionel Messi. Despite the squad’s tremendous level of quality, it hasn’t been all smooth sailing so far this season.

Despite the squad’s tremendous level of quality, it hasn’t been all smooth sailing so far this season.

Can Lionel Messi still have the same impact?

The free transfer signing of Lionel Messi this summer astonished the footballing world, and expectations were naturally sky-high. Unfortunately, Messi has not performed as well as he has in the previous decade. Despite playing three matches, he has yet to score or assist, leading some to wonder if he still has the same impact as he did at Barcelona. With a knee injury, he was substituted in his last game against Rennes, raising questions about his availability versus Man City.

With six goals in as many games against Man City, he knows PSG fans will be keen for him to play and hope this is the match that kickstarts his career at PSG.

Recent Form

Manchester City has been in sensational form, scoring 14 goals and conceding only four in their last four games, including a 6-3 win against RB Leipzig in their first Champions League group stage meeting. Man City, unlike PSG, had a relatively quiet summer window, with Jack Grealish (£100 million) being the sole prominent addition.

While Grealish is an important addition who will help Man City compete in the Champions League, the lack of forwards brought in is a cause for concern if Gabriel Jesus is sidelined.

There have been tales of discord in the PSG camp, with Mbappe obviously irritated by Neymar’s failure to release a pass to him in their Ligue 1 victory against Montpellier, with Mbappe even reportedly dubbing him a “tramp.”

Mauricio Pochettino downplayed the situation, saying, “These things happen amongst top players,” but the evident dissension could be an indication of PSG’s lack of chemistry in their 2-2 draw with Club Brugge.

It will take time to see if Mbappe and Neymar can overcome their personal troubles, both on and off the field, but if they can link together and reach their full potential, they will be a force to be reckoned with. If Lionel Messi is able to return from injury, PSG will have a good chance of winning at home against Manchester City.

Man City has been defensively solid in the Premier League this season, conceding only one goal and facing only six efforts on target. This will boost Pep Guardiola’s belief in his team’s ability to frustrate PSG’s already dissatisfied stars in Paris.

My Prediction

The matchup is set up to be a world-class matchup that any football fan worth their salt will watch. Manchester City, in my opinion, will return home with all three points because they are a complete squad that is eager to work together rather than a team of individual superstars.
