Before Tuesday night’s AL Wild Card game, Boston Red Sox manager Alex Cora provided an update on starting pitcher Chris Sale.

The Boston Red Sox had an intriguing week, overcoming a series setback to the Baltimore Orioles to capture the American League’s top Wild Card slot with a weekend sweep of the Washington Nationals. On Sunday, starting pitcher Chris Sale pitched in a 7-5 win, but he was pulled in the third inning.

Manager Alex Cora provided an update on Sale to the media on Monday, stating that the lefty’s changeup “is not where it used to be.”

Cora says the action is ok but it was cutting. ‘The feel is not there yet…Hopefully he has a chance to start again here in October.’ Cora says the fastball and slider are in good shape.

Red Sox: Will Chris Sale pitch in postseason?

When it comes to Sale pitching in the postseason, the Red Sox must first win the Wild Card game against the New York Yankees on Tuesday night. If they do, they will play in a best-of-five Division Series against the AL East champion Tampa Bay Rays.

Cora mentioned that Sale tried to persuade him to pitch in the Wild Card game, but he declined. Instead, Nathan Eovaldi will take the mound against his former team, the Yankees, on Tuesday night. For New York, Gerrit Cole will get the start.

When it comes to the changeup, Chris Smith of MassLive.com points out that opponents are 18-for-40 when Sale pitches it, with two home runs and two doubles.

Sale only pitched 2.1 innings this past Sunday, allowing two earned runs on four hits while striking out seven batters. After recuperating from Tommy John surgery, Sale had only pitched nine games this season.

If the Red Sox make it to the ALDS, Sale’s status will be worth keeping an eye on to see if he will be able to pitch in the postseason.
