Comic Roy Wooden Jr. went from attempting to get some airtime on “This Is Not Occurring” to internet hosting the collection, again for its fourth season on Comedy Central (Fridays at midnight).
“I’ve been engaged on tales for the previous two years attempting to get on the present,” says Wooden, 39, who’s additionally a correspondent for “The Day by day Present with Trevor Noah.”
“The producers knew me and [creator and former host] Ari Shaffir knew me. It’s Ari’s brainchild, and as a comic book, I don’t ever need to be the man that steals the opposite dude’s girlfriend. That was by no means the scenario,” Wooden says. “They determined to make a change on the high. Ari and I talked … It’s a really distinctive present. There’s no different present prefer it on TV. For me to host it’s one thing I take very severely. It’s an artwork type of storytelling that, to be on TV on this short-attention-ass world we reside in now, is a severe factor.”
The collection options comedians telling (hopefully humorous) real-life tales about themselves. This season contains “Baskets” stars Louie Anderson and Martha Kelly, Howie Mandel, Lil Rel Howery and Tom Inexperienced, amongst many others.
‘These are established comedians and performers telling you issues they most likely wouldn’t even inform their closest mates.’
“It takes a 12 months to develop a narrative for this present,” says Wooden, a veteran stand-up comedian who, along with his internet hosting duties, will even inform a number of real-life tales this season. “There are folks in comedy golf equipment night time after night time sprucing [their stories] and nipping and tucking, and I didn’t need to flip down this chance. When it was offered to me, ‘Do you need to take the reins?’ — hell yeah.
“These are folks you already love telling you issues about themselves you’ll by no means have came upon in any other case … established comedians and performers telling you issues they most likely wouldn’t even inform their closest mates,” he says. “Howie [Mandel] talks concerning the time he fell off the facet of the freeway and was lined in germs. Half of the tales … are a bit of to vulgar for daytime or late-night speak exhibits. Jimmy Fallon wouldn’t allow you to sit on the [‘Tonight Show’] sofa and speak concerning the time you probably did cocaine by chance.”
So what story will Wooden share with viewers of “This Is Not Occurring”?
“The primary story I’m telling is the night time I met [2 Live Crew member] Luther Campbell at a strip celebration at some man’s home,” he says. “I used to be nonetheless in faculty [at Florida A&M] and by some means I ended up at a strip celebration at 20 years previous with a room filled with grown males. The person-to-stripper ratio was off; I used to be ready in line to get a lap dance, the identical method you wait in line to get a scorching canine.
“I believed that was the protocol after I went to a strip membership for the primary”
