Kelly Clarkson set to host Billboard Music Awards

A moment like this calls for Kelly Clarkson. Hot off her appearance on Sunday’s Academy of Country Music Awards, the hit-making singer has been tapped to host the 2018 Billboard Music Awards.

NBC is airing the trophy show this year for the first time, so it makes sense that Clarkson — a coach on the network’s singing competition “The Voice” — got the gig. The hardware will be handed May 20 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. The Peacock will air the three-hour trophy show live at 8 p.m. ET/5 PT.

“Kelly Clarkson has long been a Billboard chart phenomenon and has a firsthand understanding of what matters most in music today,” said Paul Telegdy, president of Alternative and Reality Group at NBC Entertainment. “Her enthusiasm for all genres of music and her innate sense of humor will make for a truly memorable night.”

Said Clarkson, who won the first “American Idol” competition in 2002: “To prepare for hosting the Billboard Music Awards, I already have 20 costume changes planned. I will be flying in like my girl P!nk and calling Amy Schumer and Sarah Silverman for jokes. Well, or I’m just gonna show up and celebrate my favorite artists and get to know a few more. Yeah, maybe I’ll go with that plan.”

The 2018 Billboard Music Awards is produced by dick clark productions. Allen Shapiro, Mike Mahan, Mark Bracco, Barry Adelman and Robert Deaton are executive producers.
