Columbus — at the least, the statue that dominates Columbus Circle — is protected: Gov. Andrew Cuomo has now engineered each state and federal landmark safety for the historic monument.
This time, the gov wasn’t actually big-footing Mayor Invoice de Blasio, who way back backed off from the thought of eradicating the Nice Explorer. The mayor’s ridiculous Monuments Fee wound up suggesting solely including a close-by plaque to appease the critics, and even that pointless mission appears stalled.
However Columbus will stay a goal for lefty statue-smashers lengthy after de Blasio has moved on: Progressives simply can’t put aside their obsessions with the ills of European colonialism and imperialism, nor resist judging the 15th-century genius by 21st-century lights.
They’d have come again, repeatedly, till they received their approach. Cuomo has now made that far more durable. Good for him.
